Fall Wedding Beauty Trends

“Wedding Season” is typically associated with spring and summer, but in the last several years it has extended into autumn with its warm and earthy colors on display.

So, what does this mean for brides in terms of beauty? Are there makeup choices better suited for that time of year?

Wedding-glam guru Tami Bernard, whose makeup styling also has been featured at runway shows and in Harper’s Bazar Magazine for her work with wedding designer Nancy Vuu, answers those questions and more (edited for brevity and clarity):

Is there a difference in makeup styles for weddings in fall vs those in spring?

There is no difference in the style of makeup or technique that I use for fall vs. spring, just the color selection.

Is there a way you do fall makeup specifically (application, products, etc.)?

  1. Prep the skin.
    a. Clean and moisturize.
    b. I spray Maskne Control by Skindinavia on everyone; it keeps skin cool and hydrated for 16 hours while preventing oil production and reducing inflammation.
    c. Under the eyes, I use Dewy Eyed Illuminating Serum by Beekman 1802 to calm puffiness and brighten the skin. It really awakens tired eyes (especially after those Rehearsal Dinner festivities!).
    d. Hale & Hush Hydrate Gel and Bio Relief Powder, when mixed, take away redness, which is perfect for wedding parties that are in the sun a lot before the big day. I also use it on grooms a lot.
  2. Color Correct. I use Voodoo Makeup’s 10 Years Younger. It comes in light, medium, and dark. It’s the secret to flawless skin! If you take time to get all veins, spots, and extra redness, you can use less foundation.
  3. For brushes, I use my partnered set by Omnia Pro.
  4. Eyes.
    a. To color-correct and prime the eyes, I use Make Up For Ever Ultra HD Concealer on the eyelids/eye space or sometimes a MAC Paint Pot.
    b. Doing the eyes for fall brides is my favorite! I love the warm tones; they complement all eye colors and shapes. I like to use a variety of shades but my go-to is: Tarte’s tartelette in bloom Clay Palette ~ love charmer, smarty pants, and jetsetter for a neutral base. I will then use Charlotte Tilbury’s Eyes to Mesmerize in Star Gold because it gives a pop to the eye and works on all skin tones. I always finish with shimmer in the middle. Viseart’s Paris Nude SlimPro has my two favorite shades – Saint-Honoré (rosy brown) and Marais (copper brown). Sometimes I will mix them.
    c. When it comes to eyeliner, I apply brown on all fair to tanned skin and black on darker skin to the lower outer lash area.
    d. I finish the eyes with a beautiful set of Stacked Eyelashes and waterproof Lancôme Monsieur Big Mascara in black.
  5. Face.
    a. I use Voodoo Coconut Cream Foundation/Contour.
    b. I apply Kett Fixx Creme Pro Palette Blush according to the bride’s skin color. Fair and tanned brides get Mai-Tai, a soft peach, and Morocco, a warm bronze/brown. Caicos, a deep plum, and Rio, a deep red/brown, look great on darker skin tones.
    c. I finish off the skin with an airbrush of TEMPTU Perfect Canvas foundation shade, bronzer, blush shades in soft peach or true blush, then rose gold highlighter.
  6. Lips.
    a. For fall, veryTerri beauty’s Stay Put Lip Liner in Naked or S’more is perfect for light to tanned skin and Cinnamon Sugar for darker skin. Then, I create a custom blend of lip color and finish with a gloss.
  7. Right now, I am obsessed with The Contour Book – The Art of Sculpting + Defining Volume III by Kevyn Aucoin. It has beautiful shades. I use the sculpting shades to further define the bride’s features and then mix both highlighter shades (Flash and Beam) to add a most beautiful glow.
  8. The final touch is either Bridal or Oil Control Finishing Spray by Skindinavia

What are the wedding makeup trends for fall 2022?

I really do not get caught up in trends. When working with brides during their trial run, I try to steer them away from trends. I want to give them a classic, elegant look that brings out their features and complements their skin tone. I want them to walk by their photos on the wall for the next 50+ years and still love their look, not regret a trend.

What is your best advice to brides?

Start your skincare regime early and do not wait until the last minute. Drink a lot of water, keep your skin hydrated.
Drink a little carrot juice for a glow from the inside out.
Be sure to wax or dermaplane a week before the wedding.
Go easy on the retinol!
The most important thing I can tell a bride is: If you are getting a spray tan, you need to show up to your makeup trial with it done! The makeup artist has no way of predicting how it will change the color of your skin or the colors of makeup you have chosen.

What should a bride have on hand throughout the day/evening?

A bride should have her lip pencil/lipstick/gloss. She needs to apply it right before she walks down the aisle, before she walks into the reception, and before her sunset photos.
